Odoo V20 AI : Credits, Real Costs and Production Risks
Arthur De Brauwer

In brief

AI in Odoo V20 is not free and unlimited. A new V20 database comes with 20 free test credits. Once they are gone, the service blocks and redirects you to the Odoo IAP shop, where 1 credit costs exactly €1.00, with no volume discount.

Credit consumption is a black box. In our test on a new database, the balance went from 20 credits to 9.6 credits in a quarter of an hour (€10.40 of value). According to Odoo's AI support team, no consumption history is available.

An AI mistake cannot be undone with Ctrl+Z. In an ERP, a validated transaction spreads immediately across all interconnected modules. The golden rule : the AI prepares drafts, a responsible human validates.

You can lock things down. Use your own API key (BYOK), "Restrict to Sources", "Readonly Tool" on the MCP server, and no write Topics without supervision.

Odoo V20 AI : from simple widget to operational agent

We are no longer talking about a simple widget that rephrases emails or translates text. With V20 and its new dedicated application, Odoo turns artificial intelligence into an operational agent. The AI searches your internal documents, navigates your screens and prepares concrete actions at the heart of the ERP.

On paper, the promise sells a dream: you ask questions in everyday French, the AI generates the pages of your website, pre-fills your timesheets and steers your flows.

But as soon as you step out of the sales demo and look at a company's real life, two realities stand out :

The hidden

bill :

How is AI billed ? Why does your balance drop without explanation, and what happens when the free credits run out ?

The operational

risk :

What happens if an employee naively validates an erroneous AI proposal that upsets stock or manufacturing? Is there a magic button to undo it (Ctrl+Z) ?

We tested a new V20 database, questioned Odoo's support teams directly and went through the technical documentation. Here is the complete truth, unfiltered and without mincing words.

I. The field investigation : AI credits in SaaS, Odoo's black box

When you open a new Odoo V20 database (even on a free plan with a single app), you can immediately generate text, create blocks on the website or try the AI assistant. Many users think it is free and unlimited. That is an optical illusion.

1. The welcome gift : 20 free credits

When a new V20 database is created, Odoo silently injects 20 free test credits. This invisible cushion lets you play with AI at first without taking out a credit card. And it often makes you want to go further !

3. The crash test : €10.40 gone in a few clicks

During our own test on a new database, we simply used AI in the Website app to generate a few pages and try the assistant. Result : our balance went from 20 credits to 9.6 credits in a quarter of an hour. In plain terms: €10.40 of value consumed in a few test requests.

The results are quite satisfactory: in a few clicks, you have a fully operational website, SEO-optimised and translated into FR/EN. For the curious click here.

2. The price list :             1 credit = €1.00 exactly

Once these 20 credits have evaporated, the service blocks and sends you to Odoo's IAP shop (prices as of 5 October 2026) :

  • Starter Pack : 10 credits = €10.00 (€1.00 / credit)

  • Standard Pack : 100 credits = €100.00 (€1.00 / credit)

  • Advanced Pack : 500 credits = €500.00 (€1.00 / credit)

  • Expert Pack : 1,000 credits = €1,000.00 (€1.00 / credit)

Zero degressivity : each credit costs exactly 1 euro.

4. The real problem : zero consumption history (the black box)

Where do you see this balance ? By default, nowhere in the standard interface. To see what you have left, you must :

  1. Activate Developer Mode in the settings.

  2. Go to Settings ‣ Technical ‣ In-App Purchases.

And if you want to know which task or which user consumed your credits ? It is impossible.

The official answer from Odoo's technical support (AI team) is blunt (translated from the French original) :

"At the moment, consumption history is not available. The best way to estimate how many credits are consumed is to make a request with the AI, then check your balance after the request."

Odoo adapts the charge according to the underlying model (complex tasks switch to a more expensive ChatGPT model). But for the business owner, it is a complete black box: your employees click, credits melt away at €1 apiece, and you have no log to audit the spending.

II. SaaS vs Odoo.sh / On-Premise : why you should plug in your own key (BYOK)

Faced with this IAP cost, an alternative exists: enter your own API credentials.

Odoo Online (SaaS) :

  • Official AI operation : the API key is optional. By default, Odoo runs its own service and debits your IAP credits (€1 / credit).

  • Economic recommendation : if you use AI daily, add your own OpenAI/Gemini key in the settings to pay the wholesale per-token rate rather than the IAP scale.

Odoo.sh & On-Premise :

  • Official AI operation: a personal API key is MANDATORY. The AI application requires your own API credentials (AI ‣ Configuration ‣ Settings).

  • Economic recommendation: you pay OpenAI or Google directly for actual usage (often a few cents for thousands of words), with no license surcharge.

The official architecture documented by Odoo is built around concrete modules.

III. What AI can REALLY do in Odoo V20 ?

1. Universal "Ask AI" access

Accessible from any screen with the Ctrl + K key combination or via the AI icon at the top right. You can ask it to open views or analyse data in natural language.

When you hover over the AI's answer, three quick actions appear : Send as message (email), Log as note (in the chatter of the current record) or Copy.

2. AI Agents and enterprise RAG

In the AI application, you create specialised assistants :

  • System Prompt : defines the agent's strict role.

  • Document sources : the agent indexes your PDFs, URLs, Knowledge app articles or Documents app files. As soon as the status changes from Processing to Indexed, it knows your internal procedures by heart.

  • Response styles : Odoo lets you choose between an Analytical profile (mathematical, consistent, no frills), Balanced or Creative.

  • Topics & Tools : these are the agent's hands. If you associate no Topic with it, the agent is purely advisory: it can discuss, but cannot modify any record.

3. The MCP server (Model Context Protocol)

Your Odoo database can act as a remote MCP server via the address your-database.odoo.com/mcp. This lets external AI environments (such as Claude Code) query your stock or sales pipelines securely via a dedicated API key.

IV. The crash test: "AI blew up my production, where is the Ctrl+Z button?"

Let's imagine the worst case : an AI agent is connected to your manufacturing or logistics flows with action rights.

The agent analyses a schedule, misreads a bill of materials or a safety stock, and urgently prepares the confirmation of 5 manufacturing orders (MOs) with immediate reservation of scarce components.

A rushed employee clicks "Confirm". Ten minutes later, the workshop stops: raw materials are blocked, workstations are reserved for the week and erroneous purchase orders go out to suppliers. How do you undo the damage ?

The brutal technical truth: Ctrl+Z does not exist in an ERP

In Word or Excel, you press Ctrl + Z and the error disappears. In a relational database like PostgreSQL (Odoo's engine), a validated transaction is immediately reflected in all interconnected modules:

  • Components are removed from available stock and reserved.

  • Work orders are positioned on the work centres.

  • Work-in-progress accounting entries are recorded in the general ledger.

Your only 3 emergency options (and why they hurt)

  • Manual backtracking (the administrative ordeal) : your teams must open each manufacturing order one by one, cancel the operations, create unbuild orders (Unbuild), manually readjust stock and cancel the purchase orders. It takes hours, ties up your team leaders, and the risk of forgetting an inventory line is huge.

  • Backup restoration (the nuclear option, the rollback) : on Odoo.sh, you can restore a backup from a few minutes before the error. The deadly trap: restoring a database erases EVERYTHING that happened in the meantime in the company. Quotes signed by your sales reps, invoices entered by accounting and customer payments recorded during that period disappear. In the middle of a working day, this option is almost unusable or particularly crippling.

  • The emergency corrective script : bringing in your integrator partner to inject a Python script directly into the database to clean up the anomalies. It is stressful, risky, and generates unexpected consulting costs.

V. The Architect's survival rules: restrain and reinforce AI in Odoo

Should you flee AI for all that? Not at all. But you must use the security locks documented by Odoo to protect your production tool :

Golden rule: AI prepares in Draft (Draft Only)

No AI agent should hold the rights to definitively validate a transaction (Confirm, Validate, Post). AI can prepare a draft quote or propose a procurement line. The final validation click must remain in the hands of a responsible human.

Always tick "Readonly Tool" on the MCP server

If you expose server actions to AIs through the MCP interface, Odoo's official documentation indicates an essential option : ticking the "Readonly Tool" box. This guarantees that the action only reads data without ever altering your records.

Enable the "Restrict to Sources" option

On every agent dealing with your company rules, enable this box. The AI will be strictly forbidden from making things up if the answer does not appear word for word in your indexed internal documents.

No action Topics without supervision

If an agent is configured to help your technicians or workers consult technical sheets, assign it no write Topic. An agent without a modification Topic can only inform : it can never move stock by mistake.

Only for testing. A new V20 database receives 20 free test credits. Once they are used up, the service blocks and redirects you to Odoo's IAP shop, where each credit costs €1.00.

Not in the standard interface. Activate Developer Mode, then go to Settings ‣ Technical ‣ In-App Purchases. According to Odoo's support, no consumption history is available, so you cannot see which task or user consumed the credits.

BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) means entering your own OpenAI or Google Gemini API key in Odoo. On Odoo Online (SaaS) it is optional, and recommended if you use AI daily, to pay the wholesale per-token rate rather than the IAP scale. On Odoo.sh and On-Premise it is mandatory.

No. In a database like PostgreSQL, a validated transaction spreads across all interconnected modules. Your options are manual backtracking, restoring a backup (which erases everything that happened in the meantime) or an emergency corrective script by your integrator.

Four rules : AI prepares drafts only (a human validates), tick "Readonly Tool" on the MCP server, enable "Restrict to Sources" on agents, and assign no write Topics to agents that only need to inform.

Three main things : the universal "Ask AI" access (Ctrl + K), AI Agents fed by your own documents (RAG), and an MCP server that lets external AIs such as Claude Code query your database.

Conclusion : AI is a zealous intern, you are the boss

Odoo V20's artificial intelligence offers impressive power for those who know how to channel it. But in a business management tool, speed without guardrails leads straight to derailment.

The real value does not lie in activating every AI button to follow the trend, but in building a robust architecture around your data: reliable document sources, controlled API keys to avoid the surprise bill at €1 per click, and watertight access rights so that your production stays 100% under your control.

At Niboo, we approach AI pragmatically. We help you identify the flows where AI brings a real, measurable time saving, while installing the essential safety partitions so that your ERP remains a reliable, predictable and profitable tool
